Welcome to the Seed Library
We have a Seed Library at Orkney Library & Archive, to give people in our community free access to flower and vegetable seeds whenever they need them. It means that everyone can benefit by getting a free supply of the seeds they need, while giving them somewhere to donate the leftover seeds they don’t need. By sharing seeds through the Seed Library we can give everyone the opportunity to grow their own flowers and vegetables in their gardens or allotments, saving money and saving waste.

You can find the Seed Library in the foyer at Orkney Library & Archive in Kirkwall.
Everyone is welcome to use the Seed Library. If the seed cabinets are locked just ask at the main office or the Issue Desk.
Just choose what you want from the selection available. All seeds are in an envelope with an attached leaflet which has the name and variety of the seed, and a brief description. The leaflet can be folded over or cut in half, then used to donate seeds back to us if you wish. Please also re-use the seed envelopes where possible to help keep waste to a minimum.

We hope you find the Seed Library useful. So that we can increase the variety of seeds on offer we would encourage you to donate any leftover seed from packets you’ve purchased, and also to try harvesting seed from your existing plants or flowers. You can find information sheets on how to save your seeds at the Seed Library.
