Orkney Library and Archive operates a Mobile Library Service that serves the rural parishes and islands of Orkney. The Mobile Library carries a wide range of books and audiobooks suitable for all ages and is free to use. Open our 2024 Mobile Library timetable here or if you prefer a simpler, more accessible version without the use of colour you can open our 2024 Accessible Mobile Library Timetable here. Both versions can be downloaded and printed.
Library members can use their normal library card at the Mobile Library or new borrowers can join up when they visit for the first time. Borrowers are welcome to use the Mobile Library as often as they like at any of our stops and do not need to use the same stop each time.
The stock in the Mobile Library is constantly changed and updated though borrowers can also request specific authors, titles or subjects by speaking to the librarian or by browsing the Library Catalogue online. Books can be reserved using our online catalogue and collected on your next Mobile Library visit.
Users of the Libraries in Kirkwall and Stromness are also welcome to use the Mobile Library and can borrow or return books at any site.
If you live on an island served by the Mobile Library but are not able to use it because of health or mobility issues we also offer a free Book Box service via your local haulage operator. Contact the library for more information.
The schedules for the Mobile Library can be downloaded by clicking on the links below and are also announced daily on BBC Radio Orkney between 7.30am and 8.00am Monday to Friday, where any alterations or cancellations will also be announced.
