Paleography Group
The Archive runs a paleography group for anyone interested in reading Scottish secretary script which is a form of handwriting from the 16th and 17th centuries.
Paleography Group Poster An example of secretary script
The group meets on a Monday night from 5.30pm – 6.30pm in the Archive with other members joining in online. Each week we pick a piece of writing for the group to translate, trying to decipher it word by word or even letter by letter depending on how difficult it is. We all learn from each other and improve our skills while also creating useful new transcriptions from old documents in the Archive.
If you are interested in joining the group or just want to find out more about it please contact Lucy in the Archive on 01856 873166 or email her at lucy.gibbon@orkney.gov.uk.
