If you live, work or study in Orkney then you can become a full member of Orkney Library while visitors to Orkney are welcome to join on a temporary visitor membership.
You can join the library at Orkney Library & Archive in Kirkwall, at the Warehouse Buildings in Stromness or at the Mobile Library. You just need to fill in a simple registration form and provide proof of identity to register for a library card. An account will be set up for you and you will be given a library card to use at any of our branches. You will also be given a PIN to access our computers or so that you can access our online services from home including access to our free eBooks, eAudiobooks and eMagazines.
Joining as an Adult (16+)
To join the Library you just need to fill in a registration form and provide proof of identity.
Joining as a Child (0-13) or Teen (13-16)
If you are under 16 years of age your parent or guardian must complete a family registration form and include you on it as a family member. To register your parent or guardian must provide proof of identity.
Joining as a Visitor
If you are a tourist or a short-term visitor to Orkney (staying a minimum of a week) you can join the library on a visitor membership. You just need to fill in a registration form which includes your home address and provide some proof of identity. For visiting families, the whole family can access our library services using one registration form and card.
Proof of Identity
We request that new members provide us with some proof of identity when they join. This should be some kind of official documentation with your name and address on it such as a driving licence, passport, bank statement or utility bill. We ask to see this information as a security measure and to help us to protect our lending stock and equipment.
Personal Information
The personal information that you provide on your application form is necessary for us to deliver the library services you require. We will only use this information to contact you when necessary, for example to inform you about items waiting collection or items which are overdue. Your information will not be shared or used for any other purpose and we will only keep your information for as long as is necessary for the provision of our services to you. By giving us this information on your application form you are consenting to us using your information in this way.
