Our aim is to deliver a first-class service to teachers and pupils by providing a great range of resources to support the school curriculum. We also aim to provide quality reading materials to motivate children to read and learn for pleasure. Teachers can sign up for a special School Membership card which allows them to borrow a large number of books and materials for a period of three months so that they can keep them for a whole term. This is particularly useful for borrowing project materials which they can keep for the duration of the topic.
The Mobile Library visits all of the rural schools and most of the island schools throughout Orkney. Teachers can use their School Membership to allow their pupils to choose and borrow their own books from the Mobile Library during class visits. If teachers require multiple books on a specific topic for class projects they can get in touch with the Library and a selection of suitable books can be delivered by the Mobile Library on the next visit.
We have multiple copies of many books aimed at junior and teenage readers. They are available to anyone but will be particularly useful for school, clubs or reading groups. Find out more information.
Museum Loan Boxes
Orkney Library & Archive holds a number of loanable Museum Boxes which contain museum artifacts, clothing, books and photographs. These can also be borrowed on your School Membership to assist with projects and are issued for the whole term. You can also book the Museum Boxes for a future term if you know you will need it later in the year. Due to high demand the Museum Boxes are reserved and loaned on a first come first served basis.
